About the CEO

Imara Jones, whose work has won Emmy and Peabody Awards, is the creator of TransLash Media, a cross-platform, non-profit journalism and narrative organization, that produces content to shift the current culture of hostility towards transgender people in the US. She was named by Time Magazine as one of the 100 Most Influential People on the planet in 2023. Imara is also the first trans person to ever receive an award from the National Black Journalists Association, having garnered the Journalist of Distinction Award in 2022. Also in 2022, Politico named her as one of the 40 power players at the intersection of race, politics, and policy in the United States. Among other accolades, Imara has been featured regularly in The Guardian, The Nation, MSNBC, CNBC, NPR, Fast Company and GQ. She also serves on the New York City Commission on Gender Equity, Chair of the Board for the Transgender Law Center, Co-Chair of the New Pride Agenda. Imara is also on the boards of the GLSEN, and the LGBTQ+ Museum.

About the Role

The Executive Manager for Imara Jones, TransLash CEO, will oversee essential day-to-day and longterm operations key to the success of the CEO, as well as the organization overall. The manager will also help manage key relationships, represent the CEO as needed, and serve as a pivotal internal and external interface for the CEO. They must also be willing to travel with the CEO as needed.

Imara approaches her life and work with the seriousness and rigor appropriate to vital work at a pivotal time. She believes in excellence and innovation, while at the same recognizing the necessity to stay grounded in an environment of constant demands and changes. 

The ideal candidate will align with these values and be able to immerse themselves in the myriad of roles Imara plays from CEO, to journalist, producer, spokesperson to leader. The candidate will also be committed to supporting Imara so that she can always show up as her best self in all the work that she does.

Key qualifications for this role preferably include previous exposure to managing talent and/or high profile individuals, overseeing support staff or third party contractors, building routine systems, and possessing an aptitude for understanding media production, processes, and organizations. They must also have an inherent interest in serving in a visible support capacity to a high-profile individual.

Additionally, you must be extremely organized, motivated and flexible; have little need for formal supervision; be proactive with the ability to prioritize and meet tight deadlines; efficiently coordinate multiple projects; maintain confidentiality; exhibit creativity and attention to detail; demonstrate exceptional communication and organizational skills; work well with all levels of management both internally and externally; and are eager to learn and grow.

 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage the internal and external demands on the CEO in a way which ensures the organization’s success, and the ability of the CEO to ensure high-level impact;
  • Ensure best in class administrative support to the CEO across all endeavors, by hiring and managing third-party support to handle calendar management, scheduling meetings and conference calls, making travel arrangements, managing events and appearances logistics, and expense reporting. Ensure the CEO is provided adequate time and space within and between meetings for self care and non-scheduled work time;
  • Represent the CEO in internal and external administrative meetings;
  • Serve as a point of contact for day-to-day decisions which need to be taken by CEO and relay those effectively, as well as efficiently, to all parties;
  • Manage the flow of formal communications to and from the CEO; 
  • Track the status of all CEO-related projects;
  • Coordinate various stakeholders who support the CEO including her communications, styling and travel trans;
  • Act as concierge as needed to the CEO, high-profile partners, and support team members with the same as needed;
  • Develop briefing documents in advance of CEO partner and stakeholder interactions
  • Lead meetings as requested, take notes, and ensure action items and next steps are effectively managed and delegated;
  • Expertly manage correspondence and acknowledgements including written notes, invitation management, follow up on status of tasks, and continuous updates and communication via phone, email and in person; 
  • Manage special projects as designated by CEO; 
  • Develop strong relationships with Trans leaders and external stakeholders;
  • Work closely with the COO to sync CEOs activities and decisions;
  • Ensure effective and efficient travel by guaranteeing arrangements, hotel reservations, and coordinate ground transportation;
  • Serve as traveling Chief of Staff with the CEO as needed;
  • Track travel delays and/or issues, troubleshoot, and proactively problem solve;
  • Perform miscellaneous errands as needed.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence, customer service and personal development;
  • Strong management and organizational skills; 
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred with at least 7 years’ experience as Executive Assistant or manager serving a C-level executive and/or high profile individual;
  • Experience in working with historically marginalized communities specifically TGNC, those who are Black and brown, and neurodivergent with an emphasis on a people-centered approach to work;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills;
  • Team player with warm communication style;
  • Positive and professional demeanor and ‘can-do’ solution-oriented mindset;
  • Patience and flexibility in adapting to CEO schedule and needs;
  • Ability to receive communications asynchronously, outside of standard ET business hours as needed;
  • Excellent writing and editing skills;
  • Aptitude and interest in supporting the technology needs of the CEO;
  • Strong attention to detail and follow-through on assignments;
  • Ability to own, track, manage, and prioritize time effectively while working on multiple assignments;
  • Proficiency in an office suite program, preferably Google Suite. Experience with Customer Relationship Management software (CRM), Salesforce, or similar software a plus;
  • Able to travel out of state overnight, work evenings and weekends for special events.
