Job Description

Academy of Media Arts is seeking an exemplary Principal to lead our growing high school and graduate our first class of scholars in 2023. The AMA Principal will embody the following leadership characteristics:

  • Core Knowledge: Strong teaching pedagogy and content knowledge around effective teaching strategies and professional development implementation. The capacity to plan and deliver highly effective and efficient instruction to meet the needs of all scholars.
  • Core Skills: Alignment with AMA’s academic model, based on Project-Based Learning (PBL), Culturally Responsive Teaching, Blended Learning, and Career Technical Education.
  • Core Mindset: Servant leadership with the ability to motivate AMA’s scholars to possess the commitment, grit, accountability, and creativity to succeed with AMA’s instructional model.

The Principal will be responsible for the following:

Educational Leadership:

  • Recruit, hire, train and coach talented instructional staff in implementing best practices consistent with the school’s educational philosophies;
  • Provide and monitor professional development via both in-house training and external opportunities for core instructional program approaches in the Academy of Media Arts Model, including Culturally Relevant Pedagogy and Practices, PBL, Blended Learning, and Social Emotional Learning;
  • Develop partnerships with other local educational agencies, university researchers, other area schools, and educational consultants to support teachers’ professional development and share best practices;
  • Ensure curriculum and assessments are developed and implemented consistently and in accordance with AMA’s mission and vision;
  • Ensure that curriculum meet the University of California A-G requirements;
  • Oversee the use of multiple sources of data to develop a plan for the improvement of student achievement and oversee the collection, analysis and utilization of this data in relation to specific students, teachers and curricula;
  • Develop and implement an evaluation process and evaluation criteria for all instructional staff and ensure that formal evaluations are conducted at least semi-annually;
  • Create and oversee AMA’s programs relating to Special Education, English Learners, low achieving students, gifted and high-achieving students, and other student demographic groups and lead the MTSS process;
  • Oversee and assist teachers with behavior management, including handling student suspension, expulsion and other disciplinary issues as needed;
  • Foster a positive school climate and culture aligned with AMA’s mission and vision throughout the school community, including the planning of special events, enrichment opportunities, team-building and community building events and exercises;
  • Oversee all local, state, and federal reporting related to student performance;
  • Supervise support staff and related scheduling to ensure optimal resource allocation;
  • Oversee student information in the school’s Student Information System and recruitment databases, including student progress towards graduation;
  • Coordinate all assessments and reporting, including internal assessments and annual state assessments;
  • Facilitate and maintain the school’s master calendar and bell schedules.

Communications and Outreach

  • Lead the School Site Council and oversee parent volunteer efforts;
  • Schedule and participate in regular family education and Town Hall meetings designed to communicate the Charter School’s mission, vision, and curricula to families, provide updates on school progress and operations, and cover other areas of interest to community stakeholders, in coordination with Parent and Community Engagement Liaison;
  • Assist teaching staff and the Parent and Community Engagement Liaison in overseeing and planning parent-teacher conferences, parent meetings, parent education; and parent volunteer training and scheduling;
  • Ensure open and clear lines of communication with all stakeholders, including working to resolve conflicts and disputes as they may arise between community members;
  • Oversee and support student attendance, including communicating with parents regarding attendance and truancy;
  • Collaborate with the CEO in providing regular communications to families via email, the Charter School’s website, letters home, and other avenues;
  • Maintain positive relationships with the Los Angeles Unified School District, the district Charter School Division, and SELPA.

School Management:

  • Work with the CEO and Governing Board to design and implement AMA’s strategic plan;
  • Attend all regularly scheduled Board meetings and give appropriate updates and reports on school activities, including student achievement and discipline;
  • Assist CEO with budgets, charter renewal, outreach, partnerships and other duties as required.


  • Unwavering belief in AMA’s mission and vision for student achievement
  • B.A. or B.S. required; Master’s Degree in Education or related field preferred
  • 7+ years’ experience in an urban education setting
  • 2+ years’ experience as a Principal or in a school leadership role
  • Proven history in supporting and coaching teachers and staff to produce quantifiable student achievement
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Valid California teaching or administrative credential


The salary range for this role is $100,000-$120,000 annually, commensurate with experience and expertise. In addition, AMA offers a comprehensive benefits package, and signing and retention bonuses.
